Monsplasty is a procedure that is designed to reduce and tighten the tissue and skin that causes the bulging of the mons pubis. The mons pubis, also known as the mons veneris, is the fatty area above the genitals which protects the pubic joint and bone from injury.
A number of women tend to struggle with a bulge of excess fat and skin in the mons and it can result in them feeling too embarrassed when it comes to wearing certain types of clothing, aesthetics and function. This area can begin to sag due to age, pregnancy, childbirth or weight fluctuations. Although diet and exercise do work to reduce the size of the area, sometimes they are not enough to improve the sagging and reduce the size of the pubic area, and that is when Monsplasty or the Pubic lift becomes an option to correct these issues.
The goal of the pubic lift is to reduce and/or remove any amount of excess fat and/or skin in the pubic mons region depending on the cause of the bulge.
Good Candidate for Monsplasty
The ideal candidate for Monsplasty is a woman who is unhappy with the shape and size of her mons pubis and desires to correct it. She should be in overall good health both physically and psychologically and also be able to maintain realistic expectations about the results.
Monsplasty is not recommended to individuals who are not at a stable weight.
Monsplasty or pubic lift can be performed under either local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia depending on the extent of the procedure.
Local sedation may be used if the amount of tissue being removed is minimal but if the procedure is being combined with other surgeries such as a tummy tuck (which is more invasive), general anaesthesia is necessary.
Sometimes only liposuction is sufficient to attain the desired results. Liposuction can also be used post-operatively to remove excess fatty tissue and improve the contours.
During a pubic lift, a horizontal incision is made at the upper edge of the pubic area just below the navel. The underlying muscles are raised and tightened to create a more defined and firmer pubic region. Excess skin is removed and then the pubic skin is pulled upwards into its new position. Finally sutures and skin adhesives are used to close the incision.
Recovery and Results
Following the Monsplasty surgery, you will experience some swelling and discomfort which will last for about three weeks. Most individuals however return to work in about a week but with limitations on physical activities. To help with the healing process, it is recommended to do some daily, light walking. Physical activities should be avoided for the next 4 to 6 weeks following the procedure or until your Plastic Surgeon clears you.
The initial results are noticeable immediately following the procedure with the final results showing after about 6 weeks. Although the results are permanent, they can be affected by pregnancy, childbirth or weight gain.
